Integrate Diabetes Information
into Your Coursework with Our
Diabetes Curriculum

During hands-on dental school activities, students learn to cast and drill teeth, mix amalgams, and work with various dental instruments.

As part of its mission, the South Central AHEC encourages a "Grow Your Own" philosophy by helping school-age children in its communities become more familiar with the variety of health careers available to them and the pathways to these careers after high school graduation.

South Central AHEC staff and projects provide health careers awareness activities for students in all counties of the South Central AHEC region.

  • Health Career Presentations utilize interactive and-age appropriate materials, such as coloring books and story materials for elementary students, and videos, posters, career cards, and exhibits for older students. AHEC staff also participate in career days and science/technical expositions.
  • Tours for high school students include visits to departments at UTHSCSA and local health facilities, where students receive career information and participate in hands-on activities.
  • A health professions education camp is held each summer for high school students and/or teachers from the surrounding counties. Activities include sessions at UTHSCSA; tours of local medical facilities, science laboratories, and universities; and seminars on the college application process, financial aid, and test-taking.
  • The MAPA MED PREP program, a year-round education program conducted by the Mexican American Physicians Association for minority and disadvantaged students from area high schools, is supported with South Central AHEC funds. The program's twice-monthly seminars help students develop life and socialization skills, improve academic skills, develop career goals, and become more aware of the various health careers available to them.
Annually, the South Central AHEC reaches thousands of elementary, middle, and high school students and hundreds of college undergraduates with its health careers activities.
