South Central AHEC

In South Texas, health practitioners in remote communities often have difficulty finding time away from their jobs to travel to conferences to meet their continuing education requirements. The South Central AHEC supports these practitioners by offering and/or funding continuing professional education, instructional development for practitioners who supervise students, and expanded accessibility of information resources.

  • Continuing Education and Instructional Development. South Central AHEC programs provide continuing education for regional health practitioners, covering a wide variety of topics in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and allied health. These programs include Web-based instruction for career ladder students in pharmacy and respiratory care, and instructional development for practitioners who supervise the clinical training of health professions students. Programming is provided either on-site at community facilities, at conferences in San Antonio, through interactive teleconferencing, or via the Internet.

  • Information Resources. Through the Circuit Librarian Health Information Network, librarians at UTHSCSA not only provide documents to community health practitioners, but also train public librarians in the use of computerized medical databases, making health care information more accessible to practitioners, students, and consumers in the South Central AHEC region.

  • South Central AHEC Learning Resource Center. The South Central AHEC office maintains a learning resource center with information about health careers, institutions of higher education, and career development.
